Yeah, so I skipped over Terrible Tuesday. I was having a very insomniac Sunday and Monday evening, so when Tuesday evening came around I fell asleep at the comically early 8 in the morning and didn’t wake up until I went to bed. I’ve started watching Ai City but not finished it yet, I’ll aim to do so and post the review for it tomorrow afternoon over my lunch break.

Side Note: I messed up my numbering between Ghost in the Shell and Godzilla, because I meant to post Judge as #64 and didn't; I accidentally skipped 64 as a result. I'll fill that in when I do Judge rather than try to repost threads.

Appleseed: Ex Machina is a direct sequel to Appleseed (2004) and you should probably watch that before watching this one. I think that you can follow Ex Machina without it as long as you have a decent baseline knowledge of Post-Cyberpunk settings, but you’ll have a better understanding of the characters, their relationships and the setting if you do watch that.

Watch Appleseed Ex Machina

I had a lot of conflicted and negative feelings about the 2004 Appleseed movie, and ended up being very critical of it in the end; it’s fair to say that because of that, I wasn’t looking forward to doing this one. Ex Machina is better rated and a bit newer, so I’ll at least give it a fair chance and hope that it’s better executed on the potential of Appleseed.

Closing Thoughts:

I didn’t hate it, which is good; I also didn’t like it all that much, which sucks.. The production value was a step up from 2004 and more importantly, it managed to feel like Appleseed with how it handled morality. Unfortunately, it still didn’t quite hit the mark for me in terms of story and dialogue, and I feel like it really jumped the shark near the end, which stops me from giving this a higher rating. Despite that mediocre ranking, I still thought this was the best of the 4 animated Appleseed movies, and the only one that I feel like I’d be happy to go back and watch again. I’ll probably go find the time to watch Appleseed XIII and re-read the manga before that, though.

Would I recommend this?
If you watched and enjoyed the 2004 Appleseed, or are otherwise just hungry for more Masamune Shirow adaptations, then I’d definitely give this a try. I don’t think it’s an exceptional movie by any means, but it’s very pretty and easily digestable, so I think most viewers will probably have a decent time watching it as long as you’re not expecting anything like Ghost in the Shell levels of philosophy.

I will be posting my Ai City review tomorrow afternoon since I failed to find the time to do that today. Then, tomorrow, I’ll be sitting down to watch the Puss in Boots movie from 1969 (ayyyy). Given that I’ve seen a pretty good spread of 80s anime now compared to when I started this, I’m going to try and focus Thursday’s slot a little bit more on 60’s and 70’s anime where possible, as I’d like to keep broadening my horizons and extending my relatively minimal pre-80s anime list. I also still have Judge as a penalty movie waiting to be posted and I really need to just polish that off already. I’ve already downloaded several other penalty movies to watch, but I’ll leave their titles as surprises - just know that they look very bad.
